This is one of my longest and best flights to date. The air was perfect; the plane performed flawlessly and I was loving it! The highest altitude was about 4500' so things on the ground get pretty tiny at one point This is a long video (90 minutes) and there's nothing particularly spectacular, from an observer's point of view, but to me... it was 90 minutes of high-quality aviation therapy! Enjoy the view!
This is a beautiful day for flying! My little bird likes the cold air and the view is amazing. Perfect day, perfect flight, except... you know... it was COLD! Joe was up in the WeedHopper for a few minutes, but it was too cold for the open-air cockpit so he set back down. Enjoy!
I had just taken off and I was only about 400' AGL when the sound of my engine changed abruptly. It didn't die, but it just sounded hollow... like a lower frequency or something. The RPMs remained at 6k, but I noticed the CHT began to drop and I had stopped gaining altitude. I turned back toward the airport and started looking for a place to land but after a couple of minutes, I realized that even though I didn't have the power to climb, I could still maintain my altitude... almost. I was definitely losing altitude, but very very slowly so I decided to make for the runway. I did make it, but it could have ended a lot worse! I also added a step to my pre-flight! In this video, you can hear the change in engine sound at about 1 minute and then again about 30 seconds later. After that, it's just a long, slow (and low) flight back to base so you can either ride along or skip to the end to see what caused all the trouble. On a positive note, we had it repaired that day (thanks Bob!) and the next day was an amazing flight! Enjoy.
